Can you repair part of a flat roof?

Aug 16

Flat roofs are a standard feature of buildings. They have also become more popular due to their simplicity of installation and repair. These roofs are durable, but you must inspect them for potential damage.

Cracks and bulging can be signs of roof damage. It is straightforward to repair rubber roofs. If cracks do occur, you don't need a professional roofing contractor. Here are some tips to help you fix your flat rubber roof.

Determine the extent of damage

A leaky faucet drains water a little farther away from the crack. It's easier to find cracks in your home from the inside than the outside. This allows you to see the areas where water is accumulating the most or the discoloration due to water damage. You can use a simple tape measure to find the source of water damage on the roof's exterior.

Even though leaks may seem minor, it is crucial to repair them quickly to prevent further damage to your roof. The leak could be caused by severe wear to the rubber. It is therefore important to look outside for signs of wear and tear.

Clean up

You will need to ensure the area where you will be working is clean before you can fix the cracks or tears in the rubber. You can clean your work area by removing debris, dirt, gravel, or mud. This can be done quickly and easily with a stiff broom or a cloth. It is best to wait for the roof to dry before you start any repairs.

Sealing small cracks or holes

It is easy to seal small cracks or holes. These can be quickly done with adhesive patches. To ensure there is no waste in the repair, it is always a good idea to measure the extent of the damage. The next step is to prime your roof using your adhesive primer. To ensure that there is no lifting around the corners of the patch, ensure the adhesive primer spreads slightly wider than the patch.

Adhesive patches that are pressure sensitive

To use a pressure-sensitive adhesive patch, ensure that you have an EPDM rubber roofing adhesive on hand to help you fit the repair. This adhesive should be applied to your roof's underside and the surface. After the adhesive has cured, you can apply the patch material to your roof. You will need a silicone roller to ensure the patch is flat and secure. To protect the edges, seal them with a sealant.
